How to Spend a Weekend with Kids in … ROTORUA!
Rotorua -
the place that when you get out of the car, you all look at each other and say
“Who farted?!” Well, I have to break it to you, it was no one. It is the
sulphur. Rotorua is known for its geothermal activity which brings up the
smell. At first it isn’t pleasant, it smells like rotten eggs, but after a
while it grows on you. But it doesn’t matter anyway, because there is so much
to do and see in Rotorua that you won't be just standing there taking in the
smell for very long!
You just
arrive in Rotorua, after driving or flying, and the kids need to get some of
that energy out of them after being cooped up for so long. Your first stop has
to be Velocity Valley Adventure Park. Offering six unique rides suitable for
different ages (and fear levels). The shweeb is a must. Hop in and start
peddling as you speed up to 50km per hour as you race suspended above the
ground. Insane!
After the
Adventure Park, it is time for a relaxing walk and some lunch. Have a picnic by
Lake Rotorua or the Blue Lake. Go for a swim (if it’s warm) or just a run
around whilst taking in the beautiful scenery that both lakes provide.
Now it’s
time for you to check in to your accommodation and get ready for your night at
a cultural show. Our favorite accommodations are Rotorua Top 10 Holiday Park
and Holiday Inn. The Top 10 has two fantastic natural spring spas (at two different
temperatures) which is so relaxing after a long day.
The night
is made by going and seeing a cultural show. There are plenty of different ones
on in Rotorua but the best of the best is Mitai. The bus will pick you up and
take you to the venue. They have cultural dancers, stories, traditional food
and entertainment. It is a very enjoyable and interesting night activity for
both adults and kids. The Waka (Canoe) paddling down the creek is awesome.
Since you
are in the cultural mood from the night time activities, head to Te Puia the
next morning. There is geothermal activity and mud geysers that are throughout
the park. You will also get to see native kiwi birds, traditional wood, stone
and bone carving as well as traditional buildings and performances.
Next stop
on the agenda is Rainbow Springs. Home to fantastic wildlife that call New
Zealand their home. Bird shows, interactive experiences, animals and insects to
see and also a big splash ride.
If
yesterday you did one of the lakes, do the other one today! Trust me - they are
completely different and very much worth a picnic at!
To finish
off the day, head to the Skyline Luge to tire the kids out before you head
home. The skyline luge has a fantastic view over Rotorua. With three luge tracks
you will find yourself on the scenic one (or beginners), but once you have the
hang of it, the advanced one is the one to be on. Super fast and sharp turns -
get the blood flowing!
Now it’s time to head home after an action packed weekend with the kids. They will sleep all the way home now … trust me!
